Some people know who abducted and killed kids in Oakland County, Michigan in 1976 and 1977. More energy has been expended in keeping a lid on these “cold cases” over the past 47 years than has been spent trying to solve these crimes. It is only one shocking facet of this case that when the truth finally bubbles to the surface, I believe it will be shown that a remarkable number of people knew at the time and know now who was involved in the abduction and killing of these kids. Law enforcement agencies in Oakland County are not above re-victimizing family members who dare to ask questions about the investigation and have been quick to dismiss people who have come forward with information. It has been obvious to me since early 2006 that this thing reeks. I regret not speaking publicly about these cases after it became obvious what was going on (or not going on) here. I can’t believe I spent three decades thinking the police would never stop being the voice for the kids, including my brother, who were murdered in Oakland County. These kids never had a chance–then or now. See if you agree.

I have reason to believe that my younger sister may have nearly been another victim. She says she remembers when she was 4 years old and she was approached by someone in a car–Dad came out of the house at that point and chased them off (he died in 2000). I texted her a picture of a Pontiac Le Mans and she said it looked just like it. This would have been 1978 and we were living in Oak Park.
We also had an experience in 1984 where my sister, a cousin, and I were being tailed by a car that also resembled a Le Mans; we were 10 and 11 at the time. This was also in Oak Park, on Roanoke. We were walking to the drug store on Nine Mile. Some guy was following us. We’d speed up, he’d speed up. Then he went to a car that was parked alongside the road and it pulled into the alleyway behind the drug store (it led to the parking lot at what was then the Family Market). We went into the drug store and told someone we thought someone was following us and he went out with us. We went to the payphone at the Sunoco that was on Nine Mile at Roanoke and called for a ride home. That was when we saw the car take off at high speed down Roanoke. We should have gotten the license plate number and we should have called the police!

I have more detail. I texted my sister a picture of Ted Lamborgine. She said she recognized him as the driver of the car in BOTH incidents! She said the car was dark blue with a white top–BOTH cases! I asked her was she sure and she said yes.
We both have excellent memories but I’m hardly ever the type to look someone in the eye, I’ve always been a shy person.
At any rate, she said it was back in 1978, she and a friend of ours were playing out front and I was in the backyard. The car stopped and the guy looked back and forth between the friend and my sister and decided to head for my sister. My dad came down the driveway and he took off like a shot.

I have identifed Francis Shelden in an orphanage in India where another awful case has occurred I have photos of him there , and I have solid reason to believe a long term realtionship existed between the catholic priest who ran this orphanage and was a major pedophile and child sex trafficker, and Shelden, and Frits Bernard the latter 2 of Amsterdam at the time when BOTH these men were regular sex tourists at this poor place where boys were sold routinely by the priest. Was there at any time a report of an big black Chrysler Cordoba or one similar with two men trying to pick kids up? In 1977 (I was 9) in Hamburg MI just East of South Lyon, I was approached by two guys trying to get me to get in the car.

There was two white guys in the car,maybe mid to late 20’s with longer hair and the passenger was wearing an army jacket. It was a black 4 door Cordoba or Newport. When they told me to get in the car because my mom said i was to go with them I turned and went the other way. They quickly went down the road and turned around and when they came driving slowly back I hid behind a tree then ran the 100 yds the rest of the way to where my mother was working. I never forgot that day in the summer of 77. Ever. Especially because everyone knew what was going on. I always wondered if he got out and ran at me would I have froze or would I have ran? If I continued walking the same direction as them I think they might have grabbed me. They were 12 ft from me but just late enough for the inside to be kinda dark as I couldn’t get a good look at the driver. I have never spoke of this day to this length ever. It’s upsetting and emotional,I didn’t expect it to be.
Duran, others who have written/spoken about this from back in the day have had similar reactions. Thank you for posting this. What a horrible, scary and unsafe time it was for kids in Michigan. The Oakland County child murders deeply affected generations of kids and parents. It is a stain on the state that it was never solved and that it is one of the biggest cover ups in history.
After looking on the internet, i believe it was a black 1971 or 72 Chrysler Newport or New Yorker four door. Bad exhaust and no hubcaps. Hope someday you get the answers you seek.

I’m a retired police officer, turned part time rural mailman. My aunt was also murdered by a stranger when I was 9 years old, which I believe also drives my interest in such cases. Yesterday, I listened to a podcast on the Oakland County story yesterday via True Crime Garage. Since then, I’ve been looking for a documentary, etc on the case. Didn’t want to invade your email uninvited, so I thought I’d try here.
Am I accurate in that Barry King is your father? I saw that the King family produced a documentary some years back. I was trying to find if it is available for viewing on the internet, possibly. Not sure I even own a DVD player anymore.
Sorry for your frustrations over the years. I was fortunate and proud to work for a department that had an outstanding robbery/homicide squad- run by some dedicated folks that really knew how to land the bad guys in jail. I watch these shows and constantly understand the outcomes would be very different if some of our people had been calling the shots.
Hi Chris, there are a number of podcasts out there about this case. Stay away from the earlier podcasts that rely on Wikipedia to simply repeat myths and misinformation about the case. You are right, almost no one has a DVD player anymore and my Dad (yes, he is my Dad) needs to get that DVD on YouTube. We will work on that. Documentaries and other projects which will address a wider range of information and opinions are in the works. I will post as soon as I have further information on these. I agree, the outcome would have been far different if Oakland County had asked for help from more experienced departments and if the state police had someone with more experience heading the task force. The outcome would also have been far different if the FBI in this case hadn’t been dirty. And if the medical examiner in Oakland County was not an incompetent drunk. The decision-making in this case was so flawed at the highest levels that there was no chance there would be answers.

I am watching the Children of the Snow doc. I am from generations of cops. I know how they worked back in the day before good forensics. Often they knew who but could not prove. In a severe case like this they took care to protect and serve. They thought Bush did the killings and would get away because he was from money and was protected politically. The other suspect was going in for life for his other molestations. A cop or cops killed Bush to stop him. That is why they closed the task force right after his death. That is why they obstruct and obscure investigations, to protect their own. Why do you think the original cops kids are still working the case? I know these things happened, particularly in very corrupt areas. You came across as an intelligent woman on the show, you have probably thought of this yourself.

The morning that my mother was driving me to school was the day that Gill rd was blocked of with police cars directing traffic. We were able to head north on Gill. Concerned, my mother told me when I got into the car that a child was found dead that morning on gill. The police were there because of our safety. I grew up in Berkley, though I am a bit younger and wasnt around quite yet when the killings took place, I remember the haunting feeling that still looms over the city to this day. I have always been interested if Jim Cox played a role in any of this. Even when I was in school he was still hanging around all of the schools, patroling them even when they weren’t on his beat. Hanging out with the kids, and acting like they were all his buddies. It always came across odd to me, he was just a bit too friendly, and at times inappropriate. A lot of people in the Berkley area still think he was part of this, just wondering your thoughts on it and if hes ever been looked at.
Jim Cox. I have a lot of thoughts about this guy, none of them good. It’s all hearsay, but again—none of it is good. He was a cop back when cops in towns like Berkley did whatever the F they wanted with no repercussions. People still seem to be afraid of him. No one has questioned or confronted him. He’s old now, but had a lifetime of cop entitlement and I’m assuming still has plenty of guns. Bad news.

I read today a blog you wrote several years ago about Greg Green(e) that you titled, Animal. In the early 70s, Green molested some of my boyhood friends in Fountain Valley, CA, and I would have been one of them if not for my mother’s gut instincts about him. Greg did landscaping work in my backyard for months that Spring/Summer – allthewhile coaching little league amongst us all – and he asked my Mom to allow me to go with him for pizza and movies the night he molested Jimmy (and then left him for dead outside a hospital in Huntington Beach). There were no computers back then and the scuttlebut was that Green got 20 years jail time for assault and molestation; reading the facts of his actual punishment was sickening to learn today though I was pleased to learn from your blog that Green died in prison in 1995.
Thank you for this post. First, thank god for your Mom. She was right. This man was not only an animal, but a monster. Not only was he a sadistic child torturer and rapist, I believe he was the person who actually murdered Mark, Jill and Kris. He practiced on your friend. He thought he would never spend another day incarcerated if he silenced his victims by killing them. He was in prison on March 22, when one of the other freaks–probably Busch–had to kill Tim. Probably on camera. We have to talk about these men and what they did. So it NEVER happens again. I, too, was psyched Green died in prison (watching t.v.), although there are a hundred different ways he deserved to die. He and Chris Busch had hundreds of victims, I’m sure of it. But taxpayers are feeding and watering these utter monsters while they shuffle around in prison. A number of kids who got away from Arch Sloan have contacted me over the past few months. One of them and I agreed we would love to go pay Sloan a visit for a face-to-face. But criminals like this are cowards. I am not sure if there is any dna left but has anyone thought of submitting dna to the company parabon? I have been watching the genetic detective and she has been able to solve some 30 year old cases using dna and genealogy.
I have seen the show, too, Sandra. The MSP knows about Parabon and Bode Technologies. As the case has been handed from investigator to investigator since the task force was shut down in 1978, no one has made a clean hand off. I don’t think they have adequate DNA samples. Even though DNA testing did not exist when these crimes occurred, this was the biggest, most expensive investigation of its kind at the time. Yet evidence was mishandled, misfiled and improperly stored. I have been told by two people who were in law enforcement that the OCCK files and evidence was used over the years in the MSP Post training. You only do something like that if you are sure the case is over for good because someone made it go away so it can never be “solved.” Complete silence from the state police and OC prosecutor about the status of the DNA testing and whether any viable samples still exist. The hairs from my brother’s body were “misfiled” as animal hairs for DECADES. I believe LE would now tell you the hairs were extinguished during testing and the mtDNA sequence matches no one in CODIS or any of the men they have obtained DNA samples from. The prosecutor’s office must be very relieved that this inadequate sample will probably never be matched to anyone.
This is so sad. I do believe there was a cover up. I am hoping a new prosecutor wins in November.
It’s really our last chance. The people who know something are too cowardly to come forward.

Hello, I grew up in Birmingham in the 80s And 90’s. I’ve been deep into this case since I got into true crime in my teens. I have some ideas I never heard explored. One of these thoughts is that there seems to be small municipal airports around key areas. One in Birmingham, one a few miles from the Busch house on Ess lake, Flint, detroit, and as we know north fox had a landing strip. Has anyone ever investigated flight records of these tiny airport from around these times?
Timothy, that is an excellent point. Some mention has been made over the years about the flight records to Fox Island, but I seriously doubt anything was cross-referenced with other airports, or that the other municipal airport records were checked independently.

In this case, the lead would read: Investigators in Oakland County and at the MSP pray a social media site and sophisticated testing will not reveal any of the participants in the killing of four children who spent a combined total of 32 terror-filled days held captive before being murdered and dumped on roadsides. They feel secure that evidence destruction in 1977 and 1978 will prevent even the most sophisticated DNA testing from yielding answers and that mutual codes of silence by law enforcement and politicians will prevent even the most ardent internet sleuths from penetrating the case.

The Dillards, as in the department store, caused them a great deal of hardship. I was always told how lucky I was to escape “white slavery”. Hello Catherine, I am writing to you from Spain, so I can contribute little to your daily struggle. I follow your blog after knowing that for so many years and a needed gap of light has not yet been opened. I don’t even want to imagine how distressing and frustrating what you are going through with your family must be. But my thoughts tell me that precisely for this reason, because of the murkiness of this whole case, is why you haven’t found the answer. In the possible suicide of C.Busch is the key. Only two theories are possible because I don’t believe the suicide, the crime scene was so blatantly planned that it’s impossible not to notice. Some cop who knew a lot, made some adjustments to cover up, because he was in turn linked to the pedophile network that operated throughout the United States in that disgusting, depressing decade and fertile field of perverts and murderers. I am sure that there were polaroids, graphic material such as photos and videos, and that pedophiles like Greene, Busch and many others related to this case protected someone who, on the other hand, threatened them with death. The proofs were reduced because it interested. Suicide is the key. Someone still alive knows this, but they are soulless psychopaths, so don’t expect them to repent and speak on their deathbed. I seek the same peace that your family deserves, because there is no worse murderer than the one who takes the lives of children. I hope that something will be discovered soon, that finally someone from the police, moved by the search for the only possible truth, manages to tear down that wall that was erected to cover and contain all the shit.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how a cop or cops may well have been involved in these team killings and certainly involved in the child sex/porn ring that was operating simultaneously. There are cops today who engage in these crimes and I am sure there are at least one or two in the metro-Detroit area. That the police themselves were aware of their corruption is enough for them to try to hide any evidence. The hippie era shamed America, the proliferation of murders, disappearances, serial killers, underground pedophile rings, Vietnam, race riots, the senators and prosecutors of the most conservative wing of the country, the police could not be allowed to be corrupted by perversion and evil. It is better not to know, even at the risk of being unfair to the families of those poor children, than to uncover a scandal that would have collapsed the very foundations of the political and social system of the United States. If we add to that the influence of economically powerful men, the result of this theory is quite probable. Righteousness and strength, in relation to public opinion, but really rotten and full of vice in privacy, a reflection of life itself. There was and is a demand for these perversions, it has always been that way and it has always been in the sewers of the state. The unpleasant smell comes out sometimes, but every effort will be made to hide it. There is no certainty, but there are no doubts either.
This theory is pure speculation based on the data I have from the research and the data provided by your blog. I try to be objective and serious, but I make use of intuition and here I expose what I believe. I encourage other readers to do the same to contrast opinions, as well as comment, correct my mistakes or erroneous data if any. My theory is that neither Mark nor Tim were prey for Busch, nor for Greene or Sloan, but for someone powerful with an accomplice (pedophile cop) known only to Chris Busch. Only Busch knew who this unknown pedophile was, as he worked for him. He was protecting him through a trusted police contact, which explains the continued probation, plus a little help for being the son of who he was. Busch kept it from Greene for obvious reasons. This unknown and powerful man only wanted to abuse, rape and film the boy, but Busch’s task, with the help of Greene and Sloan, was to kill him and dispose of the body. DNA found and never matched would prove this theory and also the scrupulous cleanliness of the murdered children. Busch’s suicide was a set-up as such and linked to this man. One had to make sure that an unstable and increasingly paranoid Busch did not speak under pressure and end up ratting out the unknown subject. Did Busch lend his own house to this man? It’s possible, but both the lure for the kidnapping and the transportation of the body were part of the Busch/Greene/Sloan/Gunnels team’s work. In order not to raise suspicions, Busch would say all along that the child was for him, hiding the existence of the real pedophile rapist, in fact this would somehow demonstrate or justify why Busch did not invite Greene to his home, and did not end up giving him total trust, limiting his “association” and friendship with the crazy and violent Greg Greene. Busch has shown that he liked kids over 13 and in their mid-teens, which is why I believe the OCCK murders was an assignment and Busch was the liaison. This does not mean that he did not rape or murder the children, but that it was not voluntary, but a personal commission from someone we do not yet know.
In the months after Stebbins death, North Fox Island, Richards, etc. came to light. And this was happening while Busch was being called to testify on the Bowman/Gunnels allegations. It was not the right time for another child hunt for this man or even for Busch’s own fantasy. That it is “only” two children who were sodomized and murdered would show that we are not dealing with an outburst of sexual sadism or ongoing murderous rage, but of this exclusive assignment, for which Busch was the go-between and the low profiles of Greene and Sloan, acted as the architects of the dirty work. Busch would give instructions to Greene without even bothering to know who Sloan was and avoiding interacting with him, with Greene being the one who ordered Sloan and Gunnels. I have an intuition that mutual distrust reigned in this circle, that they were all pedophiles, but especially Busch, not wanting to be linked too much with either one or the other, hence Greene’s distrust of Chris Busch.
Perhaps pressured by this stranger not to associate Mark’s death with either him or the pedophile ring (clearly homosexual), he had to find a way to cover this up to mislead both the investigators and the media. The only possible way was to kidnap a girl and repeat the same MO, this time without rape because none of these savages liked girls. This is how Jill was chosen, a local acquaintance and therefore easy to locate and watch, who was abducted (December 22, 1976) and killed without being abused or raped. As bait for Jill (as later for Kristine) Gunnels was used (this explains why Gunnels regrets and is afraid to tell what he knows, he did not murder anyone, but was complicit in the abduction). The master move was, that someone seeing Jill with a teenage boy, a few years older than her, would not arouse suspicion. They waited very little time to see how the investigations were developing. Busch was still in trouble with the law but was still blowing off steam with the teenagers around him, such as his nephews, Bowman, Gunnels and probably a few other kids. For Jill’s violent death, if I had to point fingers, I’d say only Greene was capable, or maybe Richard Lawson, but Lawson I can’t seem to link to OCCK. As a police informant, I detect a suspicious arrogance in Lawson. It is possible that he knew about these abductions and rapes, but he lacked the name of Busch and of course the powerful stranger. That he implicated, perhaps out of personal grudges or revenge, Ted Lamborghini, confirms to me that he was and is an opportunistic loudmouth. The choice of exclusive children from Livonia, Ferndale, Birmingham, Royal Oak, etc, strikes me as a personal whim on the part of someone selective and not by simple sexual predators off the street, who are usually more instinctive and hunt at random. This is very important to keep in mind in my opinion.
Not seeing the opportunity (they could have abducted any Michigan child for this purpose, but it is clear that the wishes of the unknown man and Busch were exclusive and capricious) they murdered Jill and shortly thereafter decided to abduct another girl. The girl closest to both Busch and Sloan through acquaintance and family links was Kristine (January 2, 1977). This time they changed the MO because they could not get rid of the girl in less than a week, they needed to know how the investigation was going and so they kept her much longer. They had to be cautious and be absolutely sure that all this was not associated with homosexual pedophilia, but with a violent child murderer. In other words: She was used because she intended her death, like Jill’s, to be associated with a serial killer of boys and girls alike and not with a homosexual pedophile killer.

Past this time, it was time to get another child under 13 and more childlike and innocent looking to the pedophile monster who was offering big money (in case he was a corrupt cop and pedophile he would give protection, or blackmail, cover up, in exchange for) to Busch. I’m pretty sure the two knew each other from North Fox Island (or from the street if we accept the cop theory) but once the network operating there was dismantled, some truly eager clients would seek to rape children on their own. I repeat, the choice of children was not random, it had to fit the preferences or obsession of this stranger. Busch opted for Tim, who fit the bill perfectly (perhaps it was the choice all along, someone knew Tim and became obsessed with the child, it tends to happen with these monsters).
-Busch, I want this kid, can you get him for me? If you do I will turn a blind eye to anything you do on your own and help protect you in the police. Only a cop would thoroughly wash his victims to erase any traces.
Contrary to the research of the excellent cop Cory Williams, who would never question his work, I would say that Greg Greene enjoyed a few weeks bail before trial, but some arrangements were made perhaps pressured by public opinion, or the task force, for the blatant granting Busch an unfair release knowing they both had the same offences. It would make sense if you are smart and want to save his (your son’s) ass or the one you are trying to protect. Rule of thumb: Try not to arouse suspicion and do what you have to do.
This is where Greene comes in, still sporting a mane and sideburns, which he immediately removed as soon as the sketch with the infamous blue Gremlin photo appeared, a red herring by all accounts. He would later opt for the look of his California years, with glasses and short hair. John Hastings I rule out because I think he is an opportunist and I see no connections to any of the suspects. Perhaps Sloan could have been the one seen with Tim on the day of his disappearance, but I don’t know his appearance in those days. Keep in mind that he was already an expert at abducting children, provided his car (’66 Boneville) and several others to the Busch/Greene scheme of work. After Tim’s death, the common link between Busch and the unknown sexual predator vanished. His admission to prison twisted the plans and the murders ceased (I would like to know if there were more cases of reported abductions subsequent to the appearance of Tim’s body).
Time passed and Busch continued to accumulate complaints, sentences and probation. It was no longer relatively easy to get children for the unknown pedophile (the cop?) because one of his associates (Greene) was behind bars. Sloan disengaged and went on his own. Gunnels chose to disappear and tried to get his wandering way of life back on track. The short-lived gang had been disbanded. Bowman had confessed that he recognized the boy King and both had been forced into sexual touching at Busch’s house. How to overlook such a confession? Was he polygraphed on this and other questions related to the OCCK case? The interesting discovery that the first cop on the scene of Busch’s alleged suicide had been a pedophile cop brings a dead man back to life! For God’s sake, with this information the puzzle moves forward considerably. I could not trust a corrupt pedophile cop. If he was the mysterious stranger, who forced Busch and his gang to get him young children in exchange for a cover-up of criminal acts, I understand why he was released so many times and even under Task Force surveillance, continued to abuse and rape young boys with impunity. Only a police officer could turn a blind eye and report that he saw nothing suspicious about Busch during the investigation of the OCCK murders.
Busch’s death was not suicide. A psychopathic criminal has no empathy, no remorse. Mistrust of the unstable Busch precipitated his death. Busch was guilty of the kidnapping and murder, perhaps he raped the children, but I get the impression that the sodomy was perpetrated by this stranger and Busch had a little fun with the child before murdering him.
MARK STEBBINS, KEYS:
Stebbins’ abduction lasted 4 days, a reasonable time to rule out a violent, spontaneous outburst murder, typical of lone serial killers. My theory is that it was a victim selected for abuse and rape that would be filmed and photographed. We are in the golden age of buying and selling pedophile pornographic material consumed in high places. This dirty work has to be done as a team (street soldiers, led by someone trustworthy and of good family, like Busch or a cop). This leads to Chris Busch as the prime suspect in the plot. The low profile pedophile scum (Sloan, Lawson, Greene, Lamborghini) are de facto ruled out as a direct connection to Shelden or someone powerful. Mark Stebbins was not cleaned up, nor dressed scrupulously like the rest of the victims, so he may well be effectively, the first victim of these four OCCK murders. There is no indication that his death was filmed, because according to the autopsy, he died of asphyxiation. If his killer’s intention was to film his death in the middle of a rape as part of the plan, in this case it makes no sense. Why he was killed may be because the boy saw his captors at all times, especially Busch, and I do not rule out that this final decision was because he was his first victim and had not reached adolescence, when he could buy their will, their silence or threaten them with death if they talked about what happened, something that is more difficult in young children.

Thank you very much, Juan. A lot to think about. For now, I would just make three comments. One, I hope investigators have DNA from John McKinney and Jack Faxon. Two, someone who was victimized by the pedophile ring said one of these freaks was always on the hunt for/desired a kid with a gap in his/her teeth. I have an idea who this man was.
Three, because multiple criminals were involved in each crime, a DNA “hit,” if there ever is one, is just the beginning of what will require some very serious detective work. In a captivity sex slaying, there are the lures, the abductor(s), the person/people who sexually assaulted, the person/people responsible for the captivity, the murderer, and the people involved in dumping the body.
