Yes, you read that right. Charleston County Magistrate Judge James B. Gosnell Jr., 68, was arrested after DOJ investigators found a flash drive during a search of his home containing numerous videos and images depicting child sexual abuse. This included videos and images of minors, infants and toddlers engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The federal judge denied Gosnell’s bond request and he will remain incarcerated until his preliminary hearing on Monday.
His attorney argued that His Honor should receive bond because he didn’t distribute any of the materials (just kept it all to himself) and because of safety concerns given his rulings in some of the other inmates’ cases. (Should have thought of that before he assumed he would never be caught, but he’s getting some special rooming in view of his former profession.)
Gosnell is the judge who presided over the bond hearing for the then 21-year-old shooting suspect Dylann Roof, who would later be convicted of the June 18, 2015, shooting deaths of nine parishioners of Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston. Ironically, yesterday the current FBI Director Kash Patel “appeared not to recognize” Roof’s name or the Charleston mass murders under questioning before the Senate which involved, among other things, the recent shooting murder by a 22-year-old white male in Utah.
