1995

I am searching FOIA documents for some specific information and found this series of 1995 incident reports from the MSP.  The report was in the FOIA documents provided by former Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper, who was forced to hand these over after initially denying them to my dad after it was discovered that she had happily provided documents to the media.

The “Smith” mentioned in this series of pages is pedophile Larry Smith, who was “cleared” in the OCCK case.  Apparently his name and the “Smith cottage” was on the radar in 1995.  Off the top of my head, the only other significant factor in 1995 was the death of pedophile Greg Greene, who allegedly had a heart attack while watching t.v. at Jackson Prison.

Take a look at how the evidence was handled in the OCCK case.  In 1995 the “property in question” had been in the lab Property Room for 19 years.  “UD14s [evidence forms] had not been completed,” and “[t]he property was inventoried and UD14s were completed.”  Is this when the hairs from my brother’s body were misfiled as “animal hairs,” or did this certification inspection not reveal an earlier error?

  1. Do you know where Smith lived? And who is this Jacobi? Were they by chance active in the early 70s?
The amount of evidence and the specificity of descriptions are depressing, given that everything found with my cousin was, it appears, discarded.

      1. I thought Larry Smith died in an Arizona prison on 7/7/2008.

Some other information I remember is that Smith lived in Royal Oak, and his attorney, Myron Poe (office in Royal Oak), also represented Kristine’s mother’s divorce from Tom Ashcroft.

        Some information from another document:
Norberg may have known another suspect, Larry Smith of Royal Oak. Now in Arizona Prison for child molestation. Friend of John Agnew. Lived in large house in Royal Oak. Father deceased. Wealthy. Unemployed. Year-around home on Sandpoint in Caseville, Michigan. Norberg may have known Attorney John Agnew of Royal Oak, (ex-Oakland County Prosecutor, Juvenile Division, at time of child killings)

          1. Yes too many similar names everywhere, and too many common names as well. The cottage in Caseville was in a particular area called Sandpoint. Very high affluent area in Caseville and very private as well in the winter.

              1. And Arthur Jacobi is a new name to me. His obituary lists many of his church affiliations. They certainly moved him around to different churches in Michigan due to some unknown reason that we may be able to guess.. Thirty years in archdiocese and long time employee and executive of K-Mart Corporation.

Curiously he passed away in Punta Gorda Florida. Seems like a lot of pedophiles eventually move there.

                1. The priest thing is very fucked up in Oakland County during that time period. Of course back then most people wouldn’t be aware of the statistical probability that numerous pedophile priests were working in perfect Oakland County. Berthiaume gets picked up for sex crimes against two boys in his parish Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington during the reign of the OCCK. Jacobi’s obit show him having served at Our Lady of Sorrows, too.

The priest shuffle begins in earnest and this is long before the Spotlight Team at the Boston Globe has figured out the church’s dirty shuffle game. But there was no way the church was going to risk any “spotlight” on it when kids were not only raped, but murdered.

“Fr. Tim” is associated with young Gary Smentowski who killed himself in 1978(?) and was allegedly the first tip the rejuvenated task force of 2005 looked at. The allegations implied a team job on these killings.

A reader made a valuable observation that Berthiaume could have been the replacement for Gerald Richards after he got sent up the river for two years. Berthiaume passed a polygraph in the OCCK case–because everyone did, except Vince Gunnels, Ted Lamborgine and John Hastings (Georgia). Berthiaume and the other three are still alive as far as I know.

I am told that AG Dana Nessel believes the OCCK was a priest from the area. Don’t know what her intel is, just know that she isn’t going to lift a finger in these cases or speak freely/compare notes with other law enforcement.

                  1. And St. Clement is down the street from where Richard Lawson lived when he was eventually arrested, charged and convicted.

Jacobi’s good friend, Father James Mayworm, is still around in Oakland County.

Berthiaume being a possible replacement for Gerald Richards makes sense. I seem to recall he had connections in the Port Huron area where Richards was from.
