Must listen

This interview of journalist Anand Giridharadas by NYT columnist Ezra Klein about the infrastructure of Jeffrey Epstein’s power is long, but a must listen.

  1. Stunning sociological analysis of the concentric circles of Epstein’s power. Thanks for recommending it.

Now I’ll spend the night wondering about its application to Oakland Co., N. Fox Island, and the OCCK case.

Here’s where I get stuck: I know there were pre-pubescent kids implicated as victims in the Epstein case, but the majority were not that young, hence, Epstein and his pathetic followers were hebephiles, not pedophiles. To engage in sex with young children risks a lot more moral conflict (I.e. harder to rationalize) and a ton more ‘reputational stink’ than with young women, and generally is not the kind of ‘loosh-ness’ these empty suits desire.

Oh well, sleep is overrated anyway. Thanks again for posting this.

    1. I agree, Mary–the concentric circles are deeply disturbing. I was especially struck by the explanation that there are many players in such rings who did not commit murder, nor would they condone it, but by playing their role in the scheme, enabled it. Also the pathetic description of these business titans who somehow thought in addition to their riches they would have beautiful young women at their beck and call, as well as conjure any criminal sexual fantasy as they sat on their cash piles. One commenter to the NYT article basically said–who could blame them, with their overweight wives at home and this smorgasbord of sexuality offered by Epstein.

More proof that one should never read the comments.

      1. The commentator sounds like just another breathtakingly handsome misogynist who married beneath him 😉. But in a way he’s making a point—blaming women for sexual assault has been a get-out-of-jail-free card for ever. Epstein’s circle could play that card under the pretense that the victims were old enough to say ‘no.’ That’s much harder to do with young children. Even Gerald Richards kept stumbling and going around in circles trying to rationalize that in front of the Senate subcommittee.
