On January 5, 2023, President Biden signed The Respect for Child Survivors Act (S. 4926) in to law. This bipartisan legislation was a response to the numerous and significant failures by the F.B.I. in the investigation of former doctor and now convicted child rapist Larry Nassar (team doctor for Michigan State University gymnastics and the U.S. Olympics national gymnastics team).

The federal law recognizes that dialed-out and inadequately trained investigators re-traumatize survivors who come forward. The FBI in the Nassar case proved itself particularly ill-suited for this kind of investigation. Hopefully they will clean up their act. State law is needed to address the many law enforcement agencies across the country who are probably 10-times worse.
