Police and District Attorney reviewing recommedations from cold case team in JonBenet Ramsey murder

True to their word that the Colorado Cold Case Review Team (CCCRT) would make recommendations in the 1996 murder of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey by year end, Boulder PD and the CCRT today announced the completion of digitization and review of all of the evidence connected to the case.

The decision to submit the case to outside review was announced in early October of this year.

Blog post 10/23

Boulder PD AND THE BOULDER COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE are now “reviewing and prioritizing” the recommendations made by the CCCRT, which included the FBI, CBI, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office and public and private forensic laboratories with expertise in cold case homicide investigations.

The massive case file, including roughly 40,000 reports and more than one million pages documenting the investigation, was digitized. It sounds like there is not a lot of usable DNA in the case, but the evidence has all been evaluated and preserved “and will continue to be ready for testing when there is proven and validated technology that can accurately test forensic samples consistent with the evidence available in this case.”

JonBenet’s half-brother commented:

This is the opportunity we have sought for a very very long time. The Cold Case Review should be the beginning of a comprehensive effort to identify and capture JonBenet’s killer. DNA tech and organizing files is great but finding the killer will likely require a dogged determination. I applaud the work to date and trust the BPD and DA Michael Dougherty to stop at nothing to find the killer of 6-year-old JonBenet. It can be done.

Daily Camera

The case was pried from Boulder PD Cmdr. Thomas Trujillo’s hands after a Change.org petition was started, circulated around the country and put in the hands of Governor Jared Polis. Can you even imagine Governor Whitmer looking for two seconds at a Change.org petition on behalf of FOUR child homicide victims in the OCCK case? Can you imagine Oakland County Prosecuting Attorney Karen McDonald working with the Michigan State Police on this cold case? Can you even imagine the MSP digitizing the entire OCCK file or working with third party labs to evaluate all of the evidence in this case to determine suitability for testing/retesting? Can you imagine not one, but two articles in the press describing steps to be taken and the fact that the investigation got moved off the dime?

Me neither.

The Ramsey murder may never be solved. But law enforcement is making an effort at transparency.

The OCCK case is almost 20 years “colder” than the Ramsey murder. It involves the murder of four kids. What is going on in Michigan, in the OCCK case, is utterly indefensible and incomprehensible. Unless, of course, they have something to hide. The news black out from 1977 continues to this very day. They don’t even try to fake it any more. It’s disgusting.

  1. Coverup, coverup, coverup. High profile execs/politicians, corporations they don’t want exposed and they’ve lost/misplaced evidence. They all know it but too afraid to be transparent.

    1. Given their line of work, they should understand that how, at a certain point, it’s better to plead to the misdemeanor instead of waiting until it is a festering felony. They are all over “acceptance of responsibility” when it’s some criminal defendant, but they will accept none in this clearly corrupt cover-up.

  2. I was with Jill maybe two weeks before she was abducted. Jill and Kristine were both taken around this time of year. Zero in the Detroit media about this case. I also think about the millions Oakland County has and what good they could do with the money.

  3. In the early 1990s DeWan Sims was a really cute black boy who was either 4 or 5 years old. He vanished from a Metro Detroit mall around November. They never found him. His mother walked and she collected a $100,000 life insurance policy. She was also a prime suspect. This case is covered almost every fall in the Detroit media. There is also a public out cry from the police for additional tips. So, it can be done Oakland County.
