One of my brothers recently told me about this memory. My brother Tim was picked for the all stars game in the summer of 1976. (This photo is from an earlier season). During the regular season, he was an infielder, but he would be playing outfield for the all star game. He was nervous about this, having not played outfield all season.
The Sunday before the game, my brothers and my dad took Tim to the field around the time set for the evening game and hit balls so Tim could practice. The idea was to have the same lighting conditions as the night of the big game. Apparently there was some mayhem, but the practice paid off. Tim got two hits at the game and caught a fly ball. He was thrilled.
It was the last baseball game he would ever play.
