There are a couple of emails and comments I have posted and reposted on my blog because I consider them helpful and insightful. Some need to be considered again and again, especially in view of the absence of any substantive work in recent years in the OCCK cold case–or at least the radio silence, based on bullshit excuses, about where this case stands.

Good afternoon Ms. Broad, 

I’m a long time Oakland County employee and I wanted some semblance of anonymity in reaching out, so I apologize. I do not work in law enforcement, however I did work for the county during L. Brooks Patterson’s tenure as county executive [. . .]. I’m 99% sure you already know this but the 1% of me that is unsure is nagging me today. 

Everything with L. Brooks Patterson is and was a dog and pony show, right down to him re-naming the Executive Office Building after himself before he died. He was a sexist and hateful prick who really suffered in the twilight years of his life. One of the people I had opportunity to meet was a reporter named Randal Yakey. He passed away in 2019 but he told me that L. Brooks Patterson’s struggle with alcohol was an open secret and that appearances were everything. After 2012 when his driver caused that car accident (and the other driver was brought up on charges thanks to complicit Sheriff Bouchard) he was most definitely unfit for office and almost never left that wheelchair. In 2016 I was at a party and happened to say “who is the old guy in a diaper?” as the smell of old urine wafted through the air. People shushed me and let me know if was LBP. He’d had a stroke and was having a hard time, and apparently no one was to know. 

Anyway, my point is that LBP and his people are not above hiding/glossing over stuff…including his complicity as prosecutor in the 1970s when he did favors for the Busch family by having scumbag Christopher Busch’s bail reduced in Genesee County reduced. I’ve heard a lot of coworkers who liked LBP say that “OCCK hit him so hard and that’s why he was an alcoholic.”  I don’t know about that but I do know that alcoholism has a strong genetic component and that for a person to become addicted they have to have the correct genetic components aligned. He was middle aged when he bungled that case and it is my assumption he was an alcoholic long before then. There is such a shroud of secrecy mixed with a disgusting admiration for him at Oakland County, and that is likely why none of the subsequent prosecutors have been of any help to your family. Listening to the latest episode of the Forever Children Podcast, hearing Eddie White list the names of people I know from work reminded me of this and I had to share in the off chance it is something you didn’t already know. I do know there are a lot of people at the county who think like me and believe LBP is the human equivalent of a full and rancid colostomy bag too, but I know we don’t advertise this at work. Hopefully there are some longtimers at the county who have reached out with more information than I have.
