Another day, another DNA solve.

Case from 1979:

Semen evidence was extracted by Florida company DNA Labs International using a device known as an M-Vac. The M-Vac sprays the sample with a solution; then, like a scientific wet-vac, it sucks it back out, bringing more of the DNA material.

The Michigan state lab is reluctant to use M-Vac technology in the OCCK case because they know how the evidence in these FOUR homicides was horribly mishandled and improperly stored.

In the OCCK case, the M-Vac might reveal DNA from Charlotte Day, Mel Paunovich, the psychic who handled some of the clothing, or the shrink up north who likewise handled it during a consultation, or anyone else who was involved in processing the crime scenes. They can be ruled out. Previously undiscovered semen from an unknown male? That’s a different matter. How about reprocessing the kids’ underwear for starters?

But if you won’t ever get on the starting block, you’ll never know what might happen. These people want to rule out the possibility of success without lifting a finger. Or an explanation to the public about why the evidence is considered ineligible for the kind of treatment being provided to cold cases around the country. Or why they won’t find a way to pay for it, as other agencies have.

Too hard, too busy, too expensive. Tell me again what the benefit was in transferring these four homicides to the Michigan State Police?

It is a continuing betrayal of Mark, Jill, Kristine and Tim. This inaction and foot/knuckle dragging, in the face of successful DNA solves in very cold cases around the country, is unbelievable.

Another cold case solved using Othram to develop a DNA profile for a previously unknown male suspect.

After 30 years, the murderer of Melanie White was identified when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department teamed with the Vegas Justice League to fund the evaluation of a STR (short tandem repeat) profile of an unknown male by third party lab Othram. Advanced DNA testing yielded a DNA profile that was used by Othram’s genetic genealogy team to develop new leads in the case.

The killer was positively identified after comparison DNA tests were conducted. The POS died in 2021, the same year Othram began its search for the truth.

There is a Y-str sample in Kristine’s case. It needs further evaluation to see if a DNA profile can be developed that is suitable for submission to CODIS (Combined DNA Index System–DNA from convicted offenders, arrestees and crime scenes) and for serious genetic genealogy evaluation.

It is appalling to me that the state lab or the MSP would balk at any expense involved in this further testing of one goddamn sample. After mishandling the grant money back in the day (how about some journalist looks into that fraud?!) and other misuses of taxpayer money in this case, my position is that they cannot cry about cost here. It is merely an excuse to foot-drag.

GET ON IT before the “owner” of that short tandem repeat drops dead, if he’s not already. Those reports are dated and we will know how long you delayed if you ever make a connection.

And yet another cold case is solved using a third party lab to complete the testing in a 1991 rape and murder case, this one in Virginia. Virginia State Police arrested the 62-year-old suspect after he was indicted. Better late than never, you POS.
