  1. Why in the hell doesn’t Mr. Appelman go talk to Hastings while he is still alive and find out what really went down with this case? Something that no one else seems to want to do. He did cover him in his previous book.

      1. He reads my blog, Ruckus. I reiterate: 1. I provided the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office with copies of the FOIA documents concerning the Georgia polygraphs, my attempted communications with polygrapher Steve Duncan, and all of the contact information I had for him. This was two years ago. 2. I abandoned my plan to hire a private investigator to track him down because law enforcement would do exactly dick with whatever we found. 3. I believe a survivor who told me, my dad and investigators that she had been trafficked in a Michigan child sex/CSAM ring during the time of the OCCK crimes. She was trafficked well into her teen years. She said she recognized John Hastings and that he (and sometimes someone she believed was his brother) were around when kids were being corralled for photographs and filming. That she did not believe he was a pedophile, just a “hanger on.” My impression was that he might have been a trafficker or a “babysitter.” She said he was awkward and that he often had a sketch book with him. Law enforcement did not believe her and thought she had read about all of this online and was conflating information. 4. According to Helen, John discussed burking and succinylcholine with her. This is not normal banter, even for two strange people. 5. The man showed up to an interview with task force members in 2009 carrying some book that was a compilation of serial killers. This apparently raised no red flags, and his story that he was just into this stuff and that’s why he was chatting Helen up about the OCCK cases. This somehow passed the smell test. 6. When I attempted to retain a law firm to file a wrongful death case on behalf of my brother Tim last April, one of the law firms I hit up was Fieger’s firm. Of the seven firms I communicated with, they were the very first to immediately blow me off. Now this could be because as a big plaintiff’s firm they don’t dabble in cases that aren’t a guaranteed payout, and they rightly send people packing quickly to stay within the statute of limitations. But you and I both know there is a big possibility the firm was advising John’s sister, who worked at the firm for many years as a paralegal, about John’s situation with Helen and maybe more. That would be a giant conflict, if ever there was one.

The bottom line here, as sad and enraging as it is, is that Garry Gray knew what he was doing when he deep-sixed that information from Steve Duncan. He didn’t follow up, he buried it, and this was a situation when they had to strike while the iron was hot. At a minimum, in my opinion, Hastings was involved in child trafficking for reasons I have outlined over the years. It paid better and was safer than selling drugs. But they missed the window to apply pressure–and you and another reader found that entry in the FOIA documents for god’s sake! If there hadn’t been a FOIA request filed and you and the other reader hadn’t found the entry (which they clearly missed while doing illegal redactions), no one would have ever known.

This was obstruction of justice. No one cares.

          1. There are people investigating Shelden. Unfortunately not many in law enforcement. I was just interviewed regarding my encounter with Shelden by a group investigating North Fox Island. Hopefully someday these atrocities are solved, but it will be done lay people taking on the tasks. For example the work Catherine Broad and her family continue to do.

            1. Thank you for doing that, David. I’m sure it wasn’t easy. One of my brothers and I also filmed with this project and I did it specifically because survivors were part of the project.

  2. Well that was quite a discussion about Shelden starting at about the 23 minute mark. $780,000 FOIA cost for the entire case. I wonder if they included all the markers that will be needed for all the redactions.
