Question–

Does anyone have any idea how to find out who worked in corporate security for General Motors in 1977 and 1978? I’m told these employees were often ex-law enforcement.

  1. That is and was true. I am certain GM still has the records , but doubt they would release them. I knew a guy who was in that line of work at GM, but I think he died. I can make some calls.

  2. This was a union job so the UAW probably has records though it would be very helpful to know what local security guards working at HQ would have been part of. The Walter Reuther labor library at Wayne State might be helpful as well.

  3. When GM CEO Bob Stempel’s son was kidnapped, he called security and they called law enforcement. In November of 1975 13 year old Tim Stempel was abducted in front of his Bloomfield Township home by two men in a car. This story doesn’t seem to be too well known and it’s never as far as I know mentioned in the same breath as the OCCK though it’s somewhat of a precursor. Long story short, they caught the young men who abducted Tim Stempel who were motivated by ransom money and didn’t harm him in any way, but I don’t think that’s why there’s a line drawn between this incident and the murders of the OCCK. It’s my feeling that the powers that were (read L. Brooks Patterson) did not want any mention of sons of GM execs in Bloomfield Township in any talk of the OCCK. I wonder if Chris Busch saw just how easy it was to just snatch a kid off of the street with the help of a buddy.

  4. Hey Cathy, I did e mail you. In Michigan, cops are required to have some sort of registration. I do not know if that is public info like it is for doctors, nurses, etc.

  5. i dont know anyone but i do remember an article in the late seventies or eighties about gms security , there were some examples of the service they gave gm execs , including escorting one execs daughter to treatment for nymphomania.. i would guess gm like many companies had fixers on staff

  6. Hey Cathy. I tried e mailing you. I did talk with a GM contact. He sais no info on white collar GM security and no way would they release records. I am sorry.

    1. Thanks, Joe. For some reason in the encrypted account, your email goes to spam. I’m sorry. This was a good reminder to wade into that folder more often.

It’s not like anyone will investigate this angle, anyway, let alone that any of these men would tell the truth. I was hopeful that someone with a conscience would speak up about someone who went from one of the OC PDs or agencies to the white collar GM security/clean up crew during that time period. Let’s face it, the murder of Chris Busch is one huge reason this case was shut down and shut off. The other huge reason is WHY he was offed and who put out the hit.

The reason I asked is this: I was told by a credible source that the mob grew increasingly concerned about the child killings in Oakland County. After all, mobsters have kids, too, and if these freaks were moving on to Birmingham, maybe the wealthier areas were next. They conducted their own “investigation,” which was probably more effective than any done then or since. They allegedly learned that the killer was the son of a GM exec and that GM security, populated with ex-cops, “took care of it.” So no worries, right?

I still maintain that it is more likely that the hit was undertaken to protect the Oakland County prosecutors office and the MSP, who had Busch in custody in late January 1977 and quickly let him go, enabling him to participate in the murder of my brother in less than two months later. This was not simple vigilante justice because Chris Busch was “untouchable” and had such “amazing” legal representation.

I don’t think for one minute that anyone involved in offing Busch would come clean or that anyone who knew, suspected, or should have known would either. All these men are dropping dead or are now old (grandfathers! How can we upset grandpa?!).

Age should not be a barrier to justice. This is all public corruption of the highest order. That a monster was exterminated does not make any of this right.

I say again–if we ever get any semblance of an answer in this case, the number of people who have known all along will shock the conscience.

      1. I found an interesting name. John J. Ahern was director of security for GM. He also served as president of the Bloomfield Village Association’s Board of Trustees. He was a volunteer fireman for Bloomfield Hills as stated in The Detroit News on August 14, 1974. Heading the volunteer force was John R. Nyland. He was the next door neighbor of H. Lee Busch. And I believe John Hastings Sr. was a volunteer fireman as well.

Apparently the entire volunteer force was made up of executives. “Every time one of our trucks goes out, they have a couple of million dollars worth of talent on them,” said John J. Ahern.

        1. The director of GM security was next door neighbor to H. Lee Busch?? Great. Yes, I remember Hastings, Sr. being a volunteer fireman and all the firetruck bullshit, too. Every time one of our trucks goes out, we have a couple of pedophiles or pedophile protectors on board. The kids love it.

          1. John Nyland was next door to Busch. Nyland was in charge of the volunteer fireman which included Ahern and Hastings Sr.

But it gets better. Nyland and his wife were both pilots and flight instructors. Nyland graduated Wayne State in 1958 in Industrial Engineering. He worked at Ford before becoming a sales manager at Holley Carburetor. He became an executive there when he replaced Edwin R. Stroh.

Stroh was from the Stroh family in Grosse Pointe. They were next door neighbors of Alger Shelden Sr., Alger Shelden Jr and Frank Shelden. And of course Frank Shelden was a pilot.
