Said Col. Grady of the Michigan State Police: “Our MSP forensic scientists are doing remarkable work and played a very important role in reexamining decades old evidence to ensure the next steps could be taken with a private laboratory. I hope Jeanette’s family finds comfort knowing we never gave up.”
And, they used the Western Michigan University cold case program they collaborate with, which I have been begging them to do in the OCCK case for years.
I want to know why the FBI is handling the hair evidence in the OCCK lab instead of the “remarkable” MSP forensic scientists. I want to know why that is the only evidence in this case that is being reconsidered. I want to know why that hair evidence was initially tested in 2009 and then ignored as advances in DNA evidence, including with degraded mtDNA evidence, have been exponential. I want to know why the MSP never digitized the case files in the OCCK case but could pay a detective full salary for a decade to be assigned to this case with absolutely nothing to show for it. I want to know why one of the hairs went missing and they are relying on an extract taken from previous testing of this hair. They are still losing evidence in 2025. And, I want to know why FBI SA Sean Callaghan is talking about the testing and why retired Det. Cory Williams is also talking about this–to civilians. Why, given the obvious leaks here, the prosecutor’s office and/or the state lab can’t just be transparent and explain what is going on. Assuming the FBI will find a way to send this hair evidence to a third party lab (I have my suspicions about this), it will be many months before any kind of genetic genealogy results would issue. Then who does the actual detective work on such a lead? The detective currently assigned who knows nothing about the case with a sloppy room full of documents that were never digitized? The MSP would never make an announcement about any results. And the current OCP will be long gone from OC (who could blame her) and on to the AG’s office where–wait for it–her law enforcement agency is the MSP. Such a clusterfuck. While I believe the corruption in this case emanates initially and most severely from the Oakland County prosecutor’s office of 1977, there is additional corruption that happens at the MSP (ditching and not following up on the Hastings’ polygraphs in Georgia), and the state police have this stonewalling bullshit down to a fine art. Do nothing or next to nothing. Report nothing. We’re too busy on other cases. Who are you going to complain to?????
I find nothing but despair when I think of the MSP and the other agencies that “are working” the OCCK case. There won’t be any answers for a screenplay conclusion, sorry. What there will be is me having to stick on these fuckers like a fly on shit to ensure they do what they say they will do. I take no comfort in anything that has been done in this case and no one should. The prosecutors office should find a creative way to report to the public what is going on in this case and why it is the biggest fail in state history. Transparency would be good practice for the next gig at the AG’s office.
