A reader wrote me this morning with these observations:
I just got caught up on your blog and read several times in various pieces of info about how Chris Busch (and his parents) are long gone but isn’t his brother still alive and living in Florida? And isn’t he the one that found him? I don’t recall seeing any docs that he was looked at again as someone with valuable info or reinterviewed as of late. I went to your blog because I was wondering if there was any update on Sloan’s comments before he died. Unless I missed something, the only things I saw was rumors/remarks that he claims to have buried a car somewhere.
There will not be an update on Sloan’s comments. No one will circle back to Charles Busch. Or any of the living people who were called to the scene of Busch’s “suicide.” Or Richard Thompson. Or Gary Hawkins. Or Larry Wasser. Or John Hastings. Or Vince Gunnels. Or their family members. Or the family members of pedophiles revealed in the OCCK files to have lived in Birmingham and Bloomfield Village, a walk or short bike ride from Tim King.
We may (finally) hear from survivors of pedophile rings from the OCCK era. Their stories are important; it will tell you how infected our society was then and how this is still true today. We will learn how they tried to tell their stories to law enforcement and were ignored. Their abusers are probably mostly long dead. They probably will not be named.
Another reader recently made another valuable observation about the lineage of polygraph, DNA testing and AI in this case. When these heinous child murders were being investigated, police relied on very primitive polygraphs. And today it is well known that the kind of sociopathic sadists who could participate in such crimes can pass these polygraphs. And we also know the men who indeed flunked polygraphs in this case decades later, suffered no consequences as a result of their “fail.”
After the primitive polygraph, investigators in later years pinned their hopes on DNA testing. In a case where the evidence was mishandled–even by 1970s standards–mishandled, improperly stored and basically handled like the old shit you keep in your garage or basement and never circle back to. Yes, there was retesting that yielded limited results. Even after this, the evidence spent more years in various locations and was not pulled to a central location and properly stored in the hopes even more advanced technology could help tell the story.
Don’t get your hopes up. And don’t expect an update or an explanation.
Now the hope is A.I.–which if used properly and creatively, may yield an explanation–a more likely than not. We know this explanation includes the fact that important evidence and files were no doubt destroyed in this case, both back in the day and along the way.
And this will also involve more waiting. And their timetable. It will feel deeply unnerving, disappointing, and tragic. But it will blow over, like it always does.
The killer(s) and their enablers evaded justice. L. Brooks Patterson, Richard Thompson and Robert Robertson continued on their career path with nary a scratch. The case was too hard! The killer was too smart! Oh well. At least only four kids spent a total of 31 days in captivity and were murdered. The water is safe again; go for a swim.
There will never be an evaluation of the obstruction of justice and public corruption in this case. The massive failures will be obvious when the case is finished being digitized. More fodder for blogs and online forums, but nothing more. We will feel outrage and we will further understand how the Epstein class is always protected.
And that will be the end of that.
