Here is a much more extensive and disconcerting overview of crimes against kids in Oakland County, prepared by Dr. Mary deYoung, who sent this to me in the wake of my “Not Normal” post of a few days ago.
Dr. deYoung is a retired professor of sociology, criminologist and author of numerous books and other works in the areas of child sexual abuse, trauma and mental illness. She has vast experience and knowledge about these subjects.
She explains that this chronological list is a work in progress and further
The list is a refined data dump at this point. Ideally in the future the data will be entered into a searchable spreadsheet so the reader can research how many times a banged up blue car appears in a case (lots) or how many perpetrators have long dark hair (lots and lots).I must say that the list features some of the most unsettling cases I’ve ever seen, yet the follow-up in public documents is often pathetically sparse. And then we do know that few cases, especially of attempted abduction, are even reported to the police, so fewer still ever make their way into the news media. It’s disconcerting.
This focuses on pre-pubescent kids (although the minimum age is stretching that a bit); the race of the child or perpetrator is only noted if mentioned in the reviewed material, and since “White” is default and not worthy of mention, that means Black, Hispanic and Asian are noted (and this bothers my sociological sensibilities); there is pathetically little follow-up in public records of most of the incidents; and, most importantly, this is a work in perpetual progress.

Sorry to bug you again, but: Will Dr. de Young’s piece be published anywhere?
You aren’t bugging me. I hope so. As she explained to me, it is still a work in progress. A lot of us are anxious to make the case to the entire country that even after 50 years these agencies won’t do the right thing in unsolved crimes against children. Oakland County has very particular scars in this regard.
I was shocked to find the podcast mentioned. Byron Hoffmeister went to HS with my mom and her brother.
I also have a couple of names to add to her list. I emailed her.
