New York Archdiocese Will Negotiate Sex-Abuse Settlement for 1,300 Accusers

The archdiocese will raise at least $300 million to fund the settlement and has agreed with its accusers on a mediator to conduct negotiations.  So they’ve agreed to a proposal for a process to go into mediation.  Lots of work still to be done.

And after more than five years of litigation, a federal bankruptcy judge has approved the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New Orleans’ proposal to pay $230 million to roughly 600 victims of sexual abuse by the church’s priests, deacons and other personnel.  In the wake of civil lawsuits, the archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 protection in bankruptcy court.

The New York archdiocese is apparently one of very few that did not file for bankruptcy protection and is selling assets and taking other steps to fund the settlements.  New Orleans, on the other hand, went running to bankruptcy court to further thwart survivors for another five years.  Like their pals at the Boy Scouts of America.  Glad to see the N.O. Archdiocese’s detour to bankruptcy court is over and it’s finally time to pay the piper.
