1979 Murder Victim Identified Using mtDNA

Delores Wulff’s husband walked on her murder basically because “there was no body.” He died some 26 years later in 2005. The Department of Justice DNA lab compared DNA from one of Delores’ children in order to identify her after 41 years.

A reader asked if the MSP ever reads about these success stories. I think the MSP and the OCP are too afraid to get to the point where there might be some real evidentiary answers in the OCCK case. Their unwillingness to do the work done in cases like this one really cannot be explained any other way.

They will say “inadequate DNA samples,” but this requires a further explanation beyond “hey, it was 1976 and 1977–what did you want us to do?” We wanted you to at least pretend to collect and store the evidence properly so you could do what was done for Delores Wulff’s family in her 1979 disappearance.

The task force was “rejuvenated” in 2005. It’s 2020. Fifteen years to get your evidentiary shit together? If you have a big goose egg, you need to tell the public and the families. Instead, they continue to shirk their duties after more than four decades. They will claim to have done all kinds of work and testing. So, let’s hear why it has come up short. Maybe you can consult with one of the hundreds of agencies around the country who are solving cold cases from that era using DNA testing.

The company line in the OCCK case has always been some version of “can’t be done, too hard!!!” Pretty good cover, up until recently. Other agencies are proving that, with a little work and patience, it isn’t too hard to solve these cases.

  1. All these old cases just confirm the MSP covered things up in this case. RR was shady. When you find out how professional and gung ho the MSP was in regards to John Norman Collins & solving the Ypsilanti murders, it’s mind boggling to know it’s the same law enforcement agency. While the Ypsi murders were 51 years ago, 30 years past that case is when the MSP sent in DNA (that was properly stored) and was able to prove without a doubt it was JNC. More positive proof that the regime under Robertson was corrupt and incompetent.

  2. Hi Cathy
I’m trying to remember the name of the child attacked prior to Mark Stebbins ,His surname was Davison I think. Did MSP track him down and interview him. What did he remember if anything
If I recall he was smothered unconscious and dumped on the side of the road,

    Thanks
    Matt

    1. James Davison, 13, was abducted June 22, 1974, around Morris Ave and Porter Ave in Allen Park, Wayne County, Michigan, and was missing for several days; he was strangled and left in an alley face down in Oakland County. He was found on June 26 in the same clothes that he went missing in. He was on his way to a friend’s house when he was abducted and his bike was found three blocks away from his home. He survived the attack and it is believed that he may have been a victim of the Oakland County Child Killer.

  3. Let’s hear it, MSP. Where are the samples, and why aren’t you testing with all of these new technologies? The case is still “open”. Seems like this would be the next step in identifying who was involved in kidnapping, molesting and murderimg these innocent children.
