I was talking this week with two old friends who grew up alongside our family in Birmingham–same junior high, same high school, same church. One commented on how many kids and teens were murdered in and around Oakland County when we were kids and teens ourselves. This was not normal. It was, at least then, an aberration. It was deeply traumatizing to entire communities. And most of these crimes remain unsolved. One has to ask: What the fuck was going on there?
People in Oakland County were happy to avoid getting mugged in Detroit or having their car stolen there. But kids and teens were being abducted, raped and murdered in and around Oakland County at an alarming rate for such a county. This was not normal. Walter Cronkite wasn’t talking about counties like Oakland very often. (Was it just ahead of its time?)
It was not normal to have a chart of dead kids in the local newspaper with seven smiling faces across the top and a “Y-axis” for: physical description of victim; when/where last seen; last seen wearing; where found/how long missing; condition of body; cause of death; sexually assaulted?; family data; personality traits. And this was just for the years 1976 and 1977.
As other writers have observed, these types of murders in the area date back well before that time and include other victims not considered “confirmed” OCCK victims. In addition, Nadine Jean O’Dell, 16, disappeared in Inkster in 1974 and has never been found. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae40kWmTqlk. And indeed, there are many other crimes against young people in Michigan that predate the 1960s, some described in the below noted website. The vast majority–unsolved. No answers.
A reader sent me a link to this Russian website that has a very comprehensive overview of such crimes and very perceptive observations about “Murders of Children,” “Michigan History.”

While there are many factual inaccuracies, it is pretty comprehensive and there are some very interesting observations about Michigan’s sad history in this regard. It appears to have been written in 2015.
Ten years later, no questions have been answered, nothing has moved the needle in any of these cases.

Here is my best suggestion. 1. Google murders.ru (3). 2. When prompted, request translation to English. 3. Click on the purple heading top left of that page, “SERIAL CRIMES. Serial killers.” 4. Takes you to a page where you choose the heading on the left “MURDER. Culprit has not been named.” 5. From that page, choose “The Michigan Story.” It’s not the easiest site to navigate.
That’s strange because I had no problem. I did have to translate each page from Russian to English. Perhaps try another browser. I used Chrome.

This isn’t about the topic, although it is loosely related, I tried to make a Wikipedia entry of Francis D. Shelden today and it was removed because, *checks notes*

So what did my draft say? I started a basic bio with sources for everything. DOB, born in Grosse Pointe, from several prominent families. I ended with an obit of his mother with sources from the Grosse Pointe News. Even my sources were flagged as not good enough. If a newspaper isn’t good enough then what is?
There is a Wikipedia page for Brother Paul’s Children’s’ Mission and Adam Starchild. But not for Shelden.
In fact, I tried to create a page called Francis Duffield Shelden and I got a source history that someone else tried to make a wiki in 2021 and it was removed as well.

It sounds to me they are claiming the new FDS Wikipedia page in not neutral, or the person is still living (at age 97). What “IH8Pedos” wrote sounded neutral to me. Below is a brief summary.

The last update from my fight with Wikipedia is they are going to delete my entry BUT, I can repost when I source my allegations. Since I have the FBI excerpts, I think I can do that. However, wiki has issues with pdfs as sources. All of my sources are from Newspapers.com clips or Grosse Pointe News articles from the Grosse Pointe Library archives.
Since the FBI charges are also pdf files, I am sure this won’t end well for my attempt.
But for now I won that fight!
Also, I located Shelden’s niece. I don’t know the proper way to ask someone for DNA, but I would think you’d have the best reason to ask her.
If that guy were my uncle, I would be vocal about his crimes and sending in my DNA without being asked.
One other item on my mind, Alger Shelden (Frank’s older brother) said he was going to post a guard on NFI to keep the nosy people out. I’ve read that several times. But I found an article that had an additional sentence from Alger that said something like: and to keep the cops from nosing around.
What???! One, no way did he pay a guard to go to the island. All lip service.

I only got through 10 of the 17 pages so far, but you are quite right, there are many inaccuracies.
Some are small (Howard Lee Bush vs. Harold Lee Busch & the person who saw Jill at Tiny Tim’s was a man, not a woman), but some are quite large which led to incorrect speculation as to what occurred. How he can state that a thorough examination revealed Jill’s injuries were caused by a close-range shotgun blast from a 12-gauge shotgun, and then speculate that she walked (on her own) a few steps away from the car when the attacker called out to her. When she turned around, the killer fired a shotgun, pointing the muzzle outside the car. I believe she was quite a ways off the freeway.
I also would like to know where certain information was obtained. Portraying Tom Robinson as a bad husband and father, that he walked away from his family, and would not support his family. Portraying Mike Stebbins as one who eventually had many criminal convictions. I guess parking tickets are frowned upon by this writer.
I do like the detail provided in all the cases, and I commend the amount of research into all of the newspaper stories that they drew from. It also brings up information/names where the information needs further verification. Examples are how does photographer James V. Ruocco fit in with Chris Busch, and is Charles Blanchard the brother of Michigan’s former Governor?
Relatively small errors take away from coverage of these crimes–wrong names, dates, repeating information that is online but disproven, using photos that are not in fact related to the OCCK or N. Fox Island cases–these make you question a piece/video production. Bigger leaps and errors (s/he does not mention that Norberg had a sister named Kristine–same spelling), the created scene at Jill’s body drop (there was one set of footprints leading to her body and they weren’t Jill’s), and other liberties with the facts put you on notice to take it all with a grain of salt. Story-telling, like what this writer created out of whole cloth concerning the families, is a big red flag, which takes away from more interesting and legitimate inquiry. But I found it interesting that someone in Russia (if in fact this person is in Russia) took a specific interest in this case and wrote about it–quite extensively–in 2015. This person made interesting observations about Ike McKinnon and H. Lee Busch long before others were asking similar questions/making similar observations. James V. Ruocco is mentioned in the N. Fox documents, but you’re right G-Man–where is the connection to Chris Busch? Charles Blanchard is all over the John McKinney FOIA documents, which were not online in 2015. Not sure about any relation to former Gov. Jim Blanchard.
I agree. I get the small errors. Back in the 1970’s I am sure law enforcement gave false information to news reporters. Like keeping Chris Busch’s name (and others) out of the newspapers until they were forced to. Then getting the age wrong or the spelling of the name wrong to confuse readers. Plus there is so much information to digest over time. It is difficult for any reader to remember it all.
I remember seeing Ruocco’s name in your FOIA documents, but the details escape me right now, or I never looked closer at him. That he may have been born in 1951 (same as Chris Busch), and has a history in Waterbury, Connecticut may mean something. H. Lee Busch has history in nearby Essex, CT.
Charles Blanchard was a former Detroit Policeman. Long a go someone commented in this blog how he framed Robert Anglin for the Cynthia Cadieux murder.
