  1. Seems to be a running theme. Accomplices often begin with a love bombing at an inflection point where their personal lives are fractured. Love bombing as in, the sudden, fortuitous appearance of opportunities. This is a highly transactional culture, top to bottom, implicating entire families through complex schema of extortion, blackmail, influence, pornography and drugs.

Dean Corll was at Elmer Wayne Henley, Jr.’s house almost every day, very friendly with his single mother, her mother, and Henley’s younger male siblings. Henley had been a straight A student until the violent dissolution of his parent’s divorce. He was known to carry a bible around. Corll wasn’t just giving out candy in Houston: he either graduated to drugs, or starting with candy was always merely an initiatory part of the approach. At least one of the mother’s of the victims had worked for Corll. Many of the victims delivered “candy” in the neighborhood. There is a reason Corll remained in or adjacent to the Heights area, just as there’s a reason Manson spent so much time in Haight-Ashbury. The best way to study a spider is to facilitate an environment where it can weave its web.

One thing I don’t see reported about David Brooks, Corll’s other accomplice, is the fact that when he arrived at the HPD to give his statement, it was originally only as a witness. He did not contact the HPD exactly. His uncle–or father–it’s unclear which, if either–called the head of the Criminal Investigation Unit, which was involved in drug stings, surveillance, and used “informers” extensively. The head of that unit was said to be a close friend. How long had this relationship existed–since Brooks got in trouble in Beaumont and was sent to Houston, not to live with his father there, but in an ever-changing series of apartments with Corll? This agent was fired, along with many others, when the new Mayor came in. The Houston police department was not federally regulated, nor did it have an internal watchdog system of any kind which didn’t simply involve executive discretion.

It’s also not much reported that Brooks handed out drugs from the stolen Corvette he said Corll had provided him as an enticement not to talk–let alone how Corll had access to stolen cars–or how many of the victims were into music, and cars, or how often the music industry and stolen cars figure into these cases through a select low-life, some well-connected representative like Terry Melcher, Jimmy Savile, or Roy Ames. One need only look into Ames’ long legendary history of exploitation and extortion among the artists he “represented” to see what kind of criminality he openly got away with as a routine.

There’s an intersection here among powerful criminals who have the blessings of intelligence agencies and the encouragement (ie machinations) of psychiatric clinics and therapeutic personnel, drug enforcement agencies, police departments, judges, research initiatives, parole bureaucrats, politicians, and institutions of influence whose subsidies weigh heavily on the side of government contracting and aggressive tax exemptions. The mechanisms of inter-agency coordination and the individual roles these various agencies play are mostly opaque, or the evidence missing, and we wonder, What did Hastings’ sister, who worked at the institution, know?

Nothing is more clouded than the behavioral research and psychiatric practices some of these criminal figures participated in or underwent–which perhaps gave Hastings’ sister the confidence to smugly say, “Prove it”–but for valuable insight into the institutional career of a figure like, say Busch, Gacy, Corll or Norman, read Tom O’Neill’s book on Manson, or Alston Chase’s book on Kaczynski. The O’Neill book gives good insight into how well-placed personnel at the PD, the DA’s office, the courts, and media coordinate. These people themselves have often been incriminated using the same tactics. Sometimes, of course, it appears they need no coercion at all.

The Alston book shows this type of coordination at the academic/institutional level.

  2. “The Jeffrey Epstein Scholarship Lodge — which was renamed to Green Lake Lodge in 2007, after Epstein was arrested on child pornography charges — was available for parents of students and other guests to rent out and spend time on the center’s campus.” https://www.businessinsider.in/international/news/jeffrey-epstein-funded-a-scholarship-lodge-where-he-visited-the-campus-of-a-teen-summer-camp-and-boarding-school/articleshow/88044174.cms. And of course the JES Lodge was located near the “junior girls” cabin. Epstein and Maxwell donated $200,000 for the cabin and stayed there for a week during the summer of 1994. Epstein attended Interlochen in the 1960s, along with camper Bill Barr. Epstein apparently had almost as much passion for classical music as he did young girls. A photo of the lodge was entered into evidence yesterday in Maxwell’s trial.
