“We need to own it.”

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields at a 2019 press conference held by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announcing the reopening of the investigation (such as it was) into the horrific murders of some 30 black children and young adults in Atlanta from 1979-1981. News anchor Monica Kaufman Pearson (1975-2012) says about these cases: “Do what should have been done in 1979, 1980, 1981. Do the police work. Solve the cases.” The footage is powerful.

“We need to own it.” “Do the police work. Solve the cases.” Three sentences you will never hear from officials regarding the Oakland County child killer case.

Here’s a 40-year-old homicide case solved recently in Colorado through DNA AND genetic genealogy. Colorado prosecutors obtained a guilty plea from a 62-year-old POS in the murder of 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski in 1980. Meanwhile, we can wallow in the FOIA documents in the OCCK case.

With the ‘stay in place’, I have been reading and reading. I had already been quite familiar with the whole case as I was a child in Oakland County during those years but my God. The amount of malfeasance within law enforcement is incomprehensible. Greg Green should have never been allowed out of California, Busch not going to jail, nobody cared about kids at all- WTF????? Gunnels can fail lie detector tests and be an Mitochondrial match and just be free to continually do crimes and not be further questioned?

One thing I am curious about… if Hastings was involved, how did his crimes suddenly stop? Or, is he just good at hiding them?

These documents are so powerful. I have been reading your blog for years and I already realized how effed up all of this has been. But when I read it all together, and it just get more more shocked each document.

    So many monsters.

    1. Yes, KP, so many monsters. And these are just the obvious monsters. I am quite sure others were wearing disguises of suits, ties, uniforms, titles, prestige, wife and kids.

If Hastings was involved, who’s to say he did stop? Whoever was doing this stopped or was unsuccessful in southeast Michigan after March 1977. Helen’s notes, in those FOIA documents, say he said something like the killer stopped because he didn’t want to get caught. If he was peripherally involved or simply had knowledge or suspicions and “took credit” for the whole deal while stringing Helen along, that is a different story. The enterprise fails because men are ending up dead or in jail or leaving the state. Bit players or those with knowledge get the Hell out of Dodge.
